This Is My Kingdom

Film is a late vocation for Carlos Reygadas, born in 1971. He first studied law, with a specialisation in conflict and peace studies, before making the move into cinema. Meanwhile, Reygadas’ minimalist style and his work with non-professional actors has found quite a following within Spanish-language cinema.

This is My Kingdom shows a group of exuberant partying locals. Loud music, lots of booze. During the party, guests begin throwing bricks at an already smashed car. Eventually, the party culminates in the destruction of everything in sight. A revolution, perhaps?

Reygadas’ short film exposes many contradictions of Mexican society. It’s his contribution to the 2010 anthology film Revolución, which consists of ten short films related to the Mexican Revolution of 1910.

The screening will take place in the presence of the Mexican director.
