Une histoire d’eau
Before Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut ended their friendship due to an unfortunate conflict, they collaborated on the short film Une histoire d’eau, which in many ways beautifully encapsulates the unique energy of the Nouvelle Vague.
Une histoire d’eau follows a woman who leaves for work only to find that Paris is flooded. Despite this, she makes a courageous attempt to reach her destination. Along the way, she meets a young man and together they drive, walk, and sail through the countryside, searching for a route to the City of Light.
With its playful narrative style, lightning-fast editing, and fascinating images of a flooded city, Une histoire d’eau is a real treat for lovers of the influential French film movement. Above all, it is a rare opportunity to see this collaboration between two directing giants on the big screen.
The film is part of CINEMATEK’s short film programme “Summer in Shorts: Love”, which also features work by Jean Genet and Charles Nichols.
