Black Panthers
The Black Panther movement was the most influential “Black power” organisation of the late 1960s, globally supported by opponents of U.S. imperialism.
French filmmaker Agnès Varda canned this short documentary when she and her husband Jacques Demy were in California for his first Hollywood production. In the summer of 1968, protests took place because of the arrest of Black political activist Huey P. Newton. Varda interviewed him about the poor prison conditions and the ideals of the Black Panther movement. Kathleen Cleaver also appears, discussing the importance of leading women within the group.
The film precedes the feature-length documentary The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975.
