From the more than 250 short films that will be shown from April 24 to May 4 during the Brussels Short Film Festival, our editorial team chose five for the “best-of” programme Kortfilm.be Selects. Come discover them on May 3 in Flagey.

The programme includes five recent European short films, two of which are Belgian: a mix of documentary, animation, and fiction.

In the presence of filmmaker Jethro Westraad. Introduction and moderation by Florian Saerens.

Carmen’s life has always been a Quixotesque comedy: living through a civil war, being a nun, building a new life, divorcing in a conservative society, and, most of all, never following any orders. Now, after 86 years of adventures, Carmen is planning her suicide.

Jyzone has just gotten out of prison. He has found a new job, but the people he meets on the way to work risk making him late for his first day. Through a poetic portrait outlined by skillful camera work, Basil Da Cunha explores the violent neighbourhood of Reboleira in Lisbon, with the participation of its inhabitants.

Upon his return to his hometown Durban in South Africa, filmmaker Jethro Westraad realises the way his neighbours live in isolation, barricaded behind high walls with barbed wire, security cameras, and vicious guard dogs. Love, Your Neighbour shows how living in a high-security bubble fuels racist prejudices and fear of the other.
