How Do You Measure A Year?
American documentary filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt is known for his collage films, which often explore the personable and psychological cores of being human, such as what it’s like to grow up as a man in The Smell of Burning Ants.
In his most recent film, he explores the relationship between a father and his daughter through home movies. Every year on her birthday, Rosenblatt films his daughter and asks her the same questions. The girl evolves from a toddler to a young woman with all the beautiful and awkward stages in between, while the father-daughter relationship evolves in all its complexity. Rosenblatt's film was nominated for an Oscar.
The film is part of the short film programme “Love Is Louder,” as part of the exhibition of the same name at Bozar. Seven filmmakers each have their own take on possible forms of love. They show us that love rarely comes easy, but is always worth fighting for.
