The Private Life of a Cat

The silent black-and-white film The Private Life of a Cat is an intimate study of a cat who gives birth to a litter of kittens and cares for them as they grow up. It is filmed entirely from the cat’s eye-level.

Maya Deren and Alexander Hammid were married for five years and also made Meshes of the Afternoon together. By comparison, this documentary is much simpler and more  straightforward—a cute little gem from a filmmaking couple that played an essential role during the rise of American avant-garde cinema.

The film is part of the short film programme “Meow Meow” during CUT TO:GENT 2024, a selection of films dedicated to cats.
