Silent Conversations
Eva Giolo silently and patiently portrays the same action over and over again. Her own body and those of her loved ones merge anonymously in a series of embraces, captured on blue-gray, faded 16mm film. Gazes are buried in necks and fingers intertwine or caress the contours of the other. Hands press softly against backs, and only the scratches on the film reel, dancing in front of the sensor, provide any movement. Relationships remain unnamed, but no one is letting go.
The Brussels-Italian artist produced her portrait series through her own production platform, elephy, and in collaboration with the Friedl Kubelka School for Independent Films in Vienna. Giolo emphasises the emotional charge that something as simple as a hug can hold. Silence is golden, also in her film. (Flo Vanhorebeek)
Silent Conversations is part of a short film programme dedicated to the films of elephy, curated by Belgian documentary filmmaker Annick Leroy for her Carte Blanche at CINEMATEK.
